It is rather a miracle. Years ago I saw you at the Palace of Fine Arts and was blown away. I never knew who you were and did not approach as I watched you watch folks try to figure it out. But being a rock lover, I knew I had to try. I bought a house and started converting my bare front yard and overgrown back yard into a collaboration of rock balancing and perennial gardens as I taught myself to feel the core of each rock and asked which of them wanted to come up off the ground and feel the weight of air around them. My neighbors think it fascinating or odd.
I have since used rock balancing in my work as a teaching artist. Over the course of two summers of working in a day camp running an expressive arts component of the daily activities, I have since taught nearly 1500 young people between the ages of 5 and 21 the joy of pushing the balance to the heights of impossible in order to overcome it. They understand the impermanence as well. It may only be for a few moments and when the chime of tumpling rock fills the air, it is only an invitation to find the balance again.
And today, after citing my inspiration yet never knowing who he was or what his name was, I received a link to Bill's website and the mystery was over. Bill...thank you for my ability to find this artform for myself. As a poet, I have known the balance of words, but to have the ability to move space through rock balancing has been a blessing, a meditation, and a salvation. Now that the snows of the northeast are melting and the rocks are ready to wake from their naps, I will have many hours finding the impossible relationships and giving them potential.

I couldn't believe my eyes, but it was incredibly true. Bill balances rocks and creates a dynamic energy unlike any I have ever seen before. My sister and I came across Bill along the shore near the Presidio in San Francisco. I didn't realize he had been the person who balanced the rock formations I saw until he then took the formations down. Energy, faith, incredible skill. Bill, you inspire me. I'm a confessed conpulsive stacker. If I don't have rocks I'll stack anything that comes to hand. My personal best was 34 plastic baby dinosaurs with my left hand only on the Victoria Clipper ride to Victoria, Canada. But rocks have always been my muse. My Native friends find me amusing. It's OK though because they beleive me when I claim that I "hear" the rocks calling me out to play. I'm so glad there are others out there who can and will move the world in such simple and inspiring ways. Thank you!
WOW! my first impression upon walking down the beach and seeing 5 piles of rocks stacked upon eachother was "what is that?!?"
Before I could contemplate whether it was real or not, I saw this man stand up and pick up a huge rock. He hefted the rock up upon another small rock and then spent several minutes twisting, turning, tilting, and tweaking the rock until suddenly he let go...
The fact that it was balancing was not what impressed me... it was the fact that you hit it several times with your finger and it did not fall... now THAT was IMPRESSIVE!!! I watched you build two more rock-on-rock piles.
At home, after a considerable amount of time, I was able to balance a half eaten (but solid) bagel upon a donut. HAHA!
Loved the Balancing Point video, it inspired me to make the effort to visit some naturally balancing rocks we have here in Australia, at Cathedral Rocks National Park.
I am a rock balancer/stacker and have bee looking for some time for some history on those egg shaped cones that Andy Goldsworthy makes. I once read an article that said similar forms were made by tribe somewhere sometime... If anyone has any info please email me at Livingrocks1@yahoo.com
